Geneva and Lausanne sit just 40 minutes apart on the shores of Lake Geneva, making them perfect for a combined weekend trip. Here's a **detailed 2-day itinerary** covering both cities.

Day 1: Geneva

### Morning (09:00-12:00)

**Start at the Jet d'Eau** — Geneva's iconic 140m water fountain on the lake. Walk along the Quai du Mont-Blanc for the best photo angle. Free to view.

**Old Town (Vieille Ville)** — Walk uphill to the Cathedral of St. Pierre. Climb the 157 steps of the north tower (CHF 7) for panoramic views of the lake, city, and Mont Blanc on clear days. Wander the cobblestone streets, browse Place du Bourg-de-Four (Geneva's oldest square).

**Reformation Wall** — In the Parc des Bastions, the 100m wall commemorates key figures of the Protestant Reformation. Free. The giant chess sets in the park are fun to watch.

### Lunch (12:00-13:30)

**Bains des Pâquis** — This beloved lakeside public bath has a simple restaurant serving plat du jour for CHF 16-20. In winter, fondue here is a Geneva institution (CHF 25/person). Entry to the baths: CHF 2.

### Afternoon (13:30-17:00)

**CERN Science Gateway** — The newly opened visitor center at the European Organization for Nuclear Research is **free** and absolutely fascinating. Interactive exhibits explain particle physics in an accessible way. The building itself, designed by Renzo Piano, is stunning. Book a free guided tour online for deeper access. **Getting there:** Tram 18 from the center (20 min).

**Alternative:** The International Red Cross Museum (CHF 15) is one of Geneva's best museums, with powerful immersive exhibits.

### Evening (18:00-21:00)

**Carouge neighborhood** — Geneva's "Little Italy," a bohemian quarter with independent shops, cafés, and restaurants. Walk the pedestrianised streets, browse artisan stores, and settle in for dinner. A main course at a Carouge restaurant costs CHF 25-35.

Day 2: Lausanne

### Getting There

Take the train from Geneva Cornavin to Lausanne (33-40 min, CHF 22 one way / CHF 11 with Half-Fare). Trains run every 10-15 minutes.

### Morning (09:00-12:00)

**Lausanne Cathedral** — The finest Gothic cathedral in Switzerland. Free entry. Climb the tower (CHF 3) for views across the red rooftops to the lake and Alps. A night watchman still calls out the hours from the tower every night — a tradition since 1405.

**Old Town** — Wind through the steep medieval streets, covered staircases (escaliers), and hidden squares. Stop at Place de la Palud to watch the animated clock at the hour.

**Collection de l'Art Brut** — A unique museum of "outsider art" created by self-taught artists, prisoners, and psychiatric patients. CHF 12. One of the most original museums in Switzerland.

### Lunch (12:00-13:30)

**Le Barbare** — A beloved Lausanne café famous for hot chocolate made from real melted chocolate (CHF 7). Pair it with a light lunch or grab a sandwich from the bakery next door.

### Afternoon (13:30-17:00)

**Olympic Museum** — As home to the International Olympic Committee, Lausanne hosts the world's best Olympic museum. Interactive exhibits, original torches, medals, and an emotional film. CHF 20 adults, CHF 10 kids. The lakeside park setting is beautiful.

**Ouchy Lakefront** — After the museum, walk along the lake promenade in the Ouchy district. Flower gardens, boat moorings, and views across to the French Alps. Rent a pedalo (CHF 20/30 min) or simply sit and watch the light change on the water.

### Late Afternoon (17:00-19:00)

**Lavaux Vineyard Walk** — If energy permits, take the train 10 minutes to Lutry or Cully and walk a portion of the UNESCO-listed Lavaux vineyard terraces. The late afternoon light on the terraced vines above the lake is extraordinary. Stop at a caveau (wine cellar) for a tasting (CHF 10-15 for 3-4 wines).

### Evening

Head back to Geneva by train (last trains run past midnight) or stay overnight in Lausanne.
