Zurich to Interlaken runs 1h 50min by direct train. Add the mountain railway to Jungfraujoch and you're looking at a 8–9 hour day — long, but one of the most memorable you can have in Switzerland.

Interlaken Without the Summit

Interlaken itself is worth the day even if you don't climb to Jungfraujoch. The town sits between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz with views of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau from every café. Take the boat across Lake Brienz (35 min to Giessbach Falls), hire a paddleboard on Lake Thun, or walk the Harder Kulm path for panoramic views.

For first-timers combining Interlaken town + paragliding or adventure sports, Jungfraujoch becomes a second day. For a pure summit day, Interlaken is the gateway — you won't spend much time there.

Jungfraujoch: What to Know

Altitude: 3,454 m — the highest railway station in Europe. Expect temperatures of -5°C to -15°C even in summer.

Journey time from Interlaken Ost: ~2 hours each way via cogwheel train through Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen, with a stop at Kleine Scheidegg.

Cost (2026): Full return from Interlaken Ost is CHF 215.80 standard adult. Swiss Travel Pass holders pay approximately CHF 108 (50% discount). Eurail Pass holders get 25% off.

What's at the top: The Sphinx Observatory (open deck, 360° views), the Lindt Swiss Chocolate Heaven shop, the Ice Palace (carved-ice caves and sculptures), and the Aletsch Glacier overlook. Budget 2–3 hours.

Must-Know Tips

  • Book 2–3 weeks ahead in July–August. The mountain railway sells out and guided tours fill fast.
  • Check weather before booking. Clouds above 2,000 m mean zero summit views. The Jungfrau webcam updates every 30 minutes.
  • Grindelwald First is a worthwhile alternative on cloudy summit days — the cliff walk and Eiger views require clear valley conditions, not summit clearance.
  • Altitude: Ascend slowly, drink water. Most people feel fine; some get mild headaches at 3,454 m.
  • Clothes: A proper warm layer (not just a hoodie) is essential. Down jackets available to rent at the top (CHF 10).
  • Cheaper alternative: Kleine Scheidegg (2,061 m) costs about CHF 90 return from Interlaken and gives excellent views of the Jungfrau trio without the full altitude climb.
